UK Domestic Travel trends for 2019
Domestic tourism in the UK saw record breaking spending figures from January to June 2018. Visit England reports that UK holidaymakers spent £4.7 billion in England in this time frame, up 4% on the same period in 2017 (Met Office Stats). With the weather this summer being the UK’s joint hottest on record, the expectation of another great summer season means that the UK looks set to continue to be a popular destination in 2019, with 59% of people planning a domestic break.
Historic & special events will promote UK getaways in 2019
2019 marks a number of important occasions and anniversaries, from historic events to notable sporting occasions, and this will likely see people travelling to various different parts of the country to make the most of these special events. In early June the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Landings will be remembered with a number of local and national events, including special commemorations at each of the country’s Imperial War Museum (IWM) sites: HMS Belfast, IWM Duxford and the Churchill War Rooms.
Holidaymakers are increasingly aware of the impact they have on a destination when they go away, with 45% of people saying sustainability is an important element when booking a holiday, up 6% from last year.
It is also increasingly a factor when choosing who they travel with, over a third (36%) of people would choose one travel company over another if they have a better environmental record - up 6% since last year. Responsible tourism is becoming a significant consideration for consumers planning a holiday, and the same can be said for more travel companies as well.
