The best of the seaside at the Teesside

If you’re looking for a great location for a static caravan in the UK, Redcar and its surrounding area is somewhere you really should get to know. Teesside is the best seaside for your UK holiday home. This is a part of the country that takes in the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors National Park as well as a spectacular coastline. Take a look below and get the low down on Redcar and Cleveland.

Why is Redcar called Redcar?

At least two elements is the answer to that one. The first part of Redcar’s name - the ‘Red’ -  is derived from ‘hreod’, which is Old English for ‘reed’. The second part - the ‘car’ - is thought to come from the ancient Scandinavian word ‘kjarr’ which meant marsh. Both words relate to how the landscape would have been in far off times.

The history of holidays in Redcar

There’s a long history here. The parish in which Redcar sits is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and by the 14th century the town  was already established as a fishing hamlet.

As early as 1818 Redcar had recognised the potential in the newly fashionable seaside holidays. By the 1840s the town was growing and when, in 1846, the Middlesbrough and Redcar Railway was completed, the business of tourism really took off.

The railway had been aimed at attracting visitors to the town, and it worked.  More facilities and attractions were needed to meet the demand. Redcar Racecourse was up and running by the 1870s and soon Redcar was established as a major seaside holiday destination. Cheap rail travel made the area’s miles and miles of golden beaches accessible to more people than ever before.

Redcar is A great location for a static caravan

When a place is so beautiful it’s bound to be famous. It’s hardly surprising that this breath-taking bit of Britain has been used as a location for film and tv settings. ‘Atonement’, the film version of Ian McEwan’s novel was shot in Redcar, in 2006. In 2010 the town was at the centre of Chanel Four’s emotional documentary ‘The Secret Millionaire’ and who can forget the legendary tv series Heartbeat? (Yes -  you do remember Nick Berry singing the Buddy Holly song that was the show’s theme tune. It was a hit in 1992). The drama, set in the 1960s, was played out against the backdrop of the area’s countryside.

So why wouldn’t you want to move your caravan to this famous location?
